The short answer
No dog is 100% hypoallergenic — allergens live in skin, saliva, and urine, not just hair. But the Shih Tzu comes about as close as a breed can. Their long, hair-like double coat traps shed strands and dander inside the coat rather than releasing it into your home, so there’s far less floating around to trigger a reaction.
Why Shih Tzus are easier on allergies
Shih Tzus grow hair rather than fur, and they shed very little. Combined with regular grooming, that means most of the dander that bothers allergy sufferers gets brushed out and washed away instead of settling on your furniture and clothes.
Keeping allergens low at home
- Brush several times a week and bathe regularly so dander never builds up.
- Wipe the coat and paws after outdoor time.
- Use a HEPA air purifier and wash bedding often.
- Spend time with an adult Shih Tzu before bringing a puppy home if anyone in the family has known sensitivities.
