What is a Shih Tzu?

The Shih Tzu is a small, sturdy toy breed known for its friendly and outgoing nature. Originating in Tibet, it was bred by Tibetan monks and brought to China, where it became a favorite of Chinese royalty. The breed stands about 9 to 10.5 inches tall at the shoulder and typically weighs between 9 to 16 pounds. Shih Tzus have a distinctive appearance with a long, flowing double coat, a pushed-in face, and large, dark eyes. Their temperament is affectionate and playful, making them excellent companions. They are known for their charming personality and get along well with families, children, and other pets.

What color are Shih Tzu dogs?

Shih Tzu dogs come in a wide variety of colors. Common colors include black, white, brown, red and gold, often with markings or combinations of these colors. They can have solid coats or a mix of colors and/or patterns, such as brown and white or black with tan points. Their diverse color palette and distinctive markings contribute to their charming and unique appearance.  Shih Tzu are know to have coats colors that change as they age and generally show a true coat color by one year of age.

How much do AKC registered Shih Tzu cost?

You can find a Shih Tzu for as much or little as you are willing to spend.  The average price fluctuates depending on where you live and what you're looking for.  At Aleka Shih Tzu, our prices are generally ranging from $1200 - $2400 for pet quality, pure bred Shih Tzu puppies.

Is a Shih Tzu a good apartment dog?

Yes!  Shih Tzu are great apartment dogs.  Shih Tzus have a moderate activity level. They do require some exercise but are not overly demanding. Typically, two to three 20-minute walks a day are sufficient to meet their activity needs. Additionally, providing them with a variety of indoor toys is beneficial, especially when they are young, to keep them engaged and stimulated. While some Shih Tzus may become more sedentary as they age, it's important to maintain their health by offering new and varied play opportunities to keep them active and mentally stimulated.

How long do Shih Tzu live?

The natural life span of a Shih Tzu is about 10 - 16 years, so average of 14 years.  There have been many known to live 18+ years.  Genetics, care and nutrition play and important role in determining how long a shih Tzu will live.

Do Shih Tzu get a long with other dogs?

Shih Tzus generally get along well with other dogs. They are known for their friendly and sociable nature, which often extends to their interactions with fellow canines. Early socialization is key to ensuring they develop positive relationships with other dogs. While they usually enjoy the company of their peers, individual temperament can vary, so it’s important to introduce new dogs gradually and monitor their interactions. With proper socialization and positive experiences, Shih Tzus typically thrive in multi-dog households and form strong bonds with their canine companions.

What is the process of getting a dog/puppy from Aleka Shih Tzu?

To get a dog or puppy from us start with reaching out via an application, an email or even a text message through social media.  If you see a puppy you are interested in just let us know and we can get you the information you need.  If its the right fit, we take a $300 deposit to reserve the puppy as it reaches maturity to go home with you. If the puppy is ready to go home when you find him/her we will set a pick up date and time.  Everything will be communicated with you once a puppy match is made. Please, before you pick up your puppy please visit our "SHOP" page.  You do not have to buy from amazon, but we do have a wide variety of things listed there that we use and recommend for your new shih Tzu puppy.  You can get these things from any place they are available.  If you ask us what we use, we are going to direct you to this web page so that you can see exactly what it is and what it looks like.

What is your health warranty/guarantee?

Our health warranty is for one year covering congenital defects that are deemed life threatening to your puppy.  We will either offer you another puppy from our next available litter or a refund based on our discretion.  Details will be outlined in your contract or purchase agreement.  Rest assured, all of our puppies are vet checked and cleared for rehoming.  In addition, all of our parent dogs are DNA tested.  We aim to breed top quality and healthy puppies!  To see sample contracts
